The 12th Annual Meeting of Asia-Pacific Safeguards Network (APSN)

The 12th APSN meeting was held virtually on 24-25 February 2022. APSN during this period was chaired by the Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety (VARANS). The purpose of this meeting was to provide an opportunity for experts from each member country to discuss and share their best experiences on the implementation of safeguards, as well as issues on related topics currently being faced in each country.

This activity was opened by Prof. Dr. Nguyen Tuan Khai, who expressed his gratitude for the participation of participants in the APSN Plenary Meeting and the purpose of APSN as a sharing experience is expected to help member countries in implementing safeguards, especially for countries that will build nuclear power plants. The first day of APSN activities began with a presentation from the IAEA by Peter Rance who delivered a presentation on Safeguards Implementation and Initiatives and continued with a presentation on COMPASS by Craig Everton from Section Head SG Operations. After that, VARANS delivered a presentation on Vietnam Safeguards Implementation Situational Practice and Challenge, which was then closed with the reading of country updates from each participant present.

The second day of APSN activities began with a presentation from the US DOE which delivered Safeguards Engagement and Training Since Covid 19 Pandemic and continued with a presentation on Capacity Building Experiences by ISCN/JAEA, Japan. After that, Canada presented on the experience of implementing training and safeguards implementation in countries during the pandemic which was then continued with a presentation on Safeguards by Design by Jeremy Whitlock from the IAEA. The activity was closed with a discussion on APSN Next steps and future activities.
