The 10th Annual Meeting of Asia-Pacific Safeguards Network (APSN)

The Asia Pacific Safeguard Network (APSN) is a professional network established on October 1, 2009, which aims to improve the quality, effectiveness and efficiency of safeguards implementation in the Asia Pacific. The number of APSN members consists of 16 countries, namely 14 countries in the Asia Pacific, the United States and Canada, and 5 (five) observers from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the European Union, Brunei Darussalam, Laos and the Verification Research, Training and Information Center (VERTIC). Taking place in Bali on August 28-29, 2019, the series of 10th anniversary of APSN with the theme Supporting Best Practices in Safeguards Implementations in the Asia Pacific Region began with remarks from the Director General of Multilateral Cooperation of the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Febryan Alphayanto Ruddyard. He said that ten years is the right time to reflect on what achievements APSN has made. Then, the challenges ahead were also explained, namely how to maintain a safeguards system that prioritizes the use of nuclear for peaceful purposes. With the support of the IAEA, it is only right that APSN expands its network to collaborate, foster mutual trust, and become the first responder on safeguards issues in the Asia Pacific region.

Then, Jazi Eko Istiyanto as the Chairman of APSN, said that Indonesia is very proud and honored to host this event, because the APSN network has provided many benefits for member countries to exchange information, experience, support, access to experts, and become a vehicle for the growth of the safeguards system in the Asia Pacific. Indonesia also expressed its readiness to focus on human resource development and strengthen the monitoring infrastructure for the implementation of nuclear safeguards.

Furthermore, Massimo Aparo as Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Safeguards IAEA, through a message he represented, said that with the use of nuclear in everyday life, it will improve the quality of human life in the long term. The event which will be held for two days will be filled with, among others, the presentation of safeguards regarding infrastructure, capacity building, communication and information systems.
